Photographer's Note
The Walls of Ávila in central Spain, completed between the 11th and 14th centuries, are the city of Ávila's principal historic feature. These fortifications are the most complete in all of Spain.
The work was started in 1090 but most of the defensive wall appears to have been rebuilt in the 12th century. The enclosed area is an irregular rectangle of 31 hectares with a perimeter of some 2,516 meters, including 88 semicircular towers. The walls have an average width of 3 metres and an average height of 12 metres. The nine gates were completed over several different periods. The Puerta de San Vicente (Gate of St Vincent) and the Puerta del Alcazar (Gate of the Fortress) are flanked by twin towers, 20 metres high, linked by a semicircular arch. The apse of the cathedral also forms one of the towers.
It is possible to walk upon the walls for roughly half the circumference. Whilst some of the walls will never be navigable in this way because of their integration into other structures, there is also a large stretch of the walls that has yet to be made safe for pedestrians.

Hello Stephen, the city walls are beautiful, and I like the point of view where the towers disappear into the distance.
Lovely colours and textures of the walls contrast with the ‘brooding ‘ sky. A decisive moment, you might not see a sky like that again.
Interesting notes.
Regards Jean.

Hello Stephen,
A very good closer view of this impressive wall and towers. The sky still looks rather heavily processed, but it certainly creates a dramatic atmosphere.
Regards,
Gert.

Hi Stephen,
The cloudy sky is hoovering over the city. The point of view is showing the details of the towers and the city walls. The sharpness is very good and the light is giving nice tints to the colours of the picture. Have a nice day.

Hello Stephen
Wonderful composition under a brooding and threatening sky. You managed the light really well to bring out the texture of the city walls and the cobbled road in difficult light. The vertical format is a great choice and the man in the distance with two cars is a wonderful inclusion.
Cheers!

Bonjour Stephen,
On voit beaucoup mieux les murailles de la ville sous cet angle même si la lumière n'existe presque pas sous ce ciel orageux. Le contre jour est très bien géré.
Amicalement

Hello Stephen,
Castles and castle walls make such interesting subjects for their variety, their history, their character and ... from an early age, we have all been fascinated with them.
I really like how you have used the linked textual details of the road and the castle wall as an inwards guide.
The repeating towers, along the wall, create the sense of depth and perspective.
I love the drama of the sky!
It is symbolically foreboding! I wonder if people would have interpreted such conditions as a threat in the olden days.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Ciao Stephen
ho visto molte foto di queste antiche mura, ma non ricordo di averle mai viste con un cielo come questo.
Eccellente taglio verticale per dare spazio alle nuvole grigie.
Saluti

Hi Stephen
A grand shot depicting the majesty of this castle walls with impression of timelessness, nicely fit the vertical format and broody indeed! just what I like...moody and dark with a touch of light. The red tiny fig is an added bonus. Excellent capture, Congrats

The mighty old walls of Avila with a dramatic sky above, what an outcome on picture you managed to collect, Stephen.
Well scaled by the lone figure in red and black, imposing and impressive location.
