Photographer's Note

I captured this small hover fly feeding on the nectar of a little flower called London Pride which we have growing in our garden. The plants flowers are 1 cm diameter approx.
The hover fly (family syrphidae) is a common insect in most gardens. There a many species of this insect which vary in size, some of the largest are sometimes mistaken for wasps.
The Hover fly larvae eat aphids (greenfly)so are a good friend of the gardener!
