Photographer's Note
On this day 100 years ago, the RMS Titanic sank, 1,517 people perishing with her. My photo was taken at the shipyard of Harland & Wolff in Belfast Northern Ireland, who built the Titanic between 1909 and 1911.
At the time of her creation, she was the largest man-made edifice in the world. At approximately 11:40pm on her maiden voyage, the ship hit an iceberg about 400 kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland. It took two hours and forty minutes to sink, taking all those innocent lives. 710 people survived the disaster. The greatest tragedy was that there were not enough lifeboats for all the passengers and due to the panic and confusion, most of the lifeboats were launched at less than half-full capacity. Sadly, an over-representation of passengers who perished were those holding a Third Class ticket or men who stayed behind in order to save women and children.
The fortunate 710 were rescued by the ship the RMS Carpathia.
Even one hundred years later the Titanic captures our imagination. And today of all days, we remember those who perished.

Hi Lisa,
I assume you had been waiting more than 3 years to post this photo, on the very same aniversary. Nice way to do so - but you know, on an aggregate scale, there were many more ships sunken since with many more fatalities, not including wars.
Yet, this event still excite minds and media around the glob, due to it's magnitude and the miss-conception prevailed back than, that a giant like the Titanic can't go under.
My hope that the world did or will learn somthing about nature's forces since this disastrous event.
Best regards
Ike

Hello Lisa,
A most appropriate photograph to upload today when we commemorate that fateful day one hundred years ago. An interesting note too and one which also reminds us that bosses in the White Star Line actually reduced the number of lifeboats available on the ship because they felt that an adequate number of lifeboats might detract from the majesty of the ship and also cause possible doubt of their firm belief that it was unsinkable.
The black and white treatment here as well as the grainy effect gives a very appropriate atmosphere as also does the huge crane and the gantry with the logo of Harland and Wolff emblazoned across it. The vignetting also is a great addition to the grim atmosphere.
How interesting too that your relative was aboard the Carpathia during the rescue!
Wonderful!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Lisa
The grain & bw presentation enhance the historic look & feel. Good sharpness and a stylish commemoration of the Titanic disaster. Excellent graphism of the lonely cranes. Good tonal range & framing. Tfs!

Hello Lisa
This image seems to be well outside your comfort zone, both geographically and thematically! It's a very evocative shot, made more so for me by the (presumably deliberate) use of vignetting and flat, low contrast, not to mention the B/W treatment. I defy any critiques you may get suggesting lack of quality control!
Regards
Will

Hi Lisa
fitting tribute and interesting notes. B&W makes this view of H&W so solemn and appropriately atmospheric and commemorative. Very expressive imagery!
Regards - Brian.
PS Flattered that you want to add my "boat wreck" to your collection. B

Ciao Lisuzza,

Howdy Lisa,
A fine tribute, written and visual with a somber empty shipyard, stately cranes as if at rest.
And a reminder to me, of how we Earthlings are often interconnected not only by tragedies, but also positives - creating, sharing, loving, friendship and exploring.
Have a great Autumn downunder,
Stay healthy and have fun,
Sincerely,
49er Ray
PS: I recorded the first America's Cup Race in Naples on cable TV, only to find out it was cancelled due to huge waves and winds. I personally would have grabbed the nearest sailboat, reefed the main, drop the jib and went cruising.....

Hi Lisa,
There's certainly Titanic documents everywhere these days. This grey view from the original shipyard fits well for commemorating the event. Including grey sky and vignetting!
I just visited Ireland myself, including Belfast one day. The new Titanic Belfast museum was just opened. Unfortunately queues were massive.

hi lisa,
what, ireland without blue sky! i don't believe it. you've obviously photoshopped this one to give the impression of a grey day in belfast!!
a lovely image of the shipyard on this particular day of remembering the titanic. and a terrific note of interest to accompany it.
have a great week.

Hello Lisa,
Grey mood on this shot, reinforced (perhaps a bit too much) by the vignetting on the corners.
I like the way you composed the shot playing with the frame inside frame effect to keep the look inside the picture.
Yves.

Hi Lisa
The birth place of the Titanic!! This is fascinating reportage, so much interesting history at some past industrial history !! Yes,100 years since it was launched but still hard to believe how an iceberg could create so much havoc. Your work is a wonderful tribute .. which is great cause this way it shows lives were not in vain.. but cherished enough to remember them. A brilliantly mastered tribute. Well done Lisa.
Warm regards
Juzo

Hi Lisa,
Quite an interesting and thoughtful dedication. The vignetting and grain give that old feel, but taken without the dedictaion, this is an interesting image on it's own, an edgy nod to constructivism, and industrial styles.
Cheers

A big drama that will remain in the history of navigation. Nice shipyard capture in grey artistic tones.
Have a fine day.

Hi Lisa,
Very iconic image. Beautiful framing using the cranes, and another great choice in B&W. Makes you stop and think a moment to remember what was built here, and its fate.
Best wishes from Ireland!
Noel
