A River Flows 2, a photo from Argyll and Bute, Scotland

Photographer's Note

The River Coupall flows past Lagangarbh Cottage beneath the imposing slopes of Buachaille Etive Mor, at the head of the Glencoe pass. With its high annual rainfall the Highlands have countless streams, burns and rivers draining the land.

If anyone has an effective way to rid a photograph of 'jaggies' I would love to have your input. This one was plagued with them on the high contrast line between the mountain tops and the sky from the word go....

la contrapposizione tra queste foto e quelle che proponi sulla Namibia è molto evidente, per ovvi motivi, ma riesci a trarre il meglio da entrambe le situazioni.
Luci forti e colori vivaci per la Namibia, esattamente il contrario per Irlanda o Scozia, ma i paesaggi riportano la tua firma.
Complimenti, sempre di bellezze si tratta ed è un vero piacere osservarli.

The composition is perfect with that river, gravel and vegetation in the foreground and the farm house and outbuilding in the near background. Not sure why you would have 'jaggies' from the word go, particularly if you have your camera set to 'raw' rather then 'jpeg'. It could be caused by in-camera process settings if you just shoot jpeg. If I was processing this using Lightroom4 I would slide the 'shadow' control a bit to the right to lighten those dark mountain areas slightly and bring out a bit more detail. I would inspect the high contrast edge for chromatic aberration and remove it if it is causing the appearance of 'jaggies'. In LR4 one only needs to tick a box 'remove chromatic aberration' and it is gone. Hope this is useful.

Hi Rosemary,
This should be an image in the visit Scorland ad campaign on TV in Ireland at the moment, the rugged peaks, the threat of rain and the natural beauty sum up this place to well, while that cottage is so idyllic. I would imagine its also quite cold too, but that's another consideration :)
Beautiful composition on leaving so much detail in the foreground creating this fantastic depth. I love the colors of the stones too!

I seen an article on the news last night, an announcement that links Ireland to Namibia. A natural park in Co Kerry has been awarded the status of outstanding place on earth for star gazing due to lack of light pollution. Its the third place on earth after New Zealand and Namibia! So there is a little link between our countries :)

I like the use of these wonderful coloured stones in the photo to frame it. The house is standing out well against the threatening sky and those dark hills. Love the v shaped gap between the hills, it allows us to see more of that dramatic sky. Nice photo with good composition, thanks for sharing.

The pretty white cottage stands up from the darlkest moutains . The red gravel in the riverbed is very attractive too .

Le regard suit naturellement le roches dans l'image vers la maison blanche. Le point de vue très bas donne beaucoup de profondeur à la composition.J'aime beaucoup l'ouverture en V dans les montagnes qui s'ouvre sur un ciel spectaculaire.

I like the low angle of view and the wonderful colour contrasts. Also, the lighting and that dramatic sky. The only problem I have and it may just be me, I can't decide whether the focal point lies with the two buildings or the gap between the hills; consequently my eyes move backwards and forwards between the two!

hi rosemary. i always work on RAW files too, and usually avoid increasing the contrast, contrarily do reduce it, resulting in a bit of HDR effect too, higlighting the shadows. the glow around the hills really has an effect like a work in layers and layer masks, but never seen such a thing in RAW processing. it might be due to the counterlight shooting too. meanwhile i do like the placing of the White cottages and the luminocity on the red rocks.

Nice view on one of the most known valleys of Scotland ! I love the red stones and the river in the FG that add colour into this dark atmosphere. The white house is perfectly placed in the picture and catches our attention.

Dear Rosemary

Excuse my ignorance but what are jaggies?

This photo has a great low POV, with the beautifully coloured rocks in the FG providing an excellent anchor for the image. The water is so limpid, the soft ripples on the water have a lovely effect. I particularly like how bright the little white house is against the dark BG and you did so well with what I guess was originally mediocre sky. I make a guess that you've selectively darkened it, and that the "jaggies" might refer to the slight separation between the mountains and sky. I find that feathering any selection I make has helped markedly with making the difference between the two more seamless. I think what you did here is very good, although Will Perrett gave some good advice when I asked him in relation to one of John Tyro's photos. I'll try and find it and send you the link.

Peaceful and wonderful scenery, magnificent POV with the crystal clear waters of the river in the foreground, which these pink stones give a special charm, lovely that lonely house by the Green Mountains. A beautiful sky that gives a dramatic touch to the composition.
A lovely colorful in very natural shades.
The lighting is very well run, good sharpness brings out the details and textures.

Such a beautiful scene! The cloudy dull sky is representative of Scotland, but its the dark mossy green slopes which creates such a contrast with the white house. The FG is beautiful...to me the most beautiful element of the composition with the multi coloured stones creating interest. There's wind as evidenced in the small ripples on the water. Fine work!

That is a frequently photographed little whitewashed cottage as you probably know. I like the darkness of the mountains as Glen Coe can be quite a forbidding place and is shown very well here. The FG is delightful with the coloured stones and gently flowing water. A very thoughtful composition.
