Photographer's Note

This was taken today on the bridge that spans the tracks at Carlisle station.By good fortune I happened to pick up a copy of the Cumbrian News as I had lunch in a cafe in the Cumbrian market town of Brampton. An article mentioned a Facebook campaign to keep the colourfully decorated Carlisle station once the filming for an advert for Homebase (the home improvement store)had been completed at that location this morning. Two thousand people had signed up to the campaign. A tiny photo showed the decorated bridge and its steps. So despite planning to drive down to Penrith a change of plan saw me at Carlisle station in double quick time.
Platform 4 was set up like a Homebase store with wallpapered area, soft furnishing, lights etc. Some sections of the patform had been laid with plastic turf and sun loungers set out. Passengers were trying these out and many people had their cameras out too. Great fun. Unfortunately the plastic turf was already being rolled up and I don't suppose anyone visiting the station tomorrow will find much to see.A pity, and this temporary arrangement made me think just how usually unimaginative station platforms are.
