Photographer's Note
Feared by any Pirate or smuggler - The customs house has stood proud in Kings Lynn for over 300 years.. It stands on Purfleet Quay where great mariners such as Vancouver and Nelson are renown.
an interesting fact is that where parts of the English coast are receding, the coast in The Wash is growing. The harbour, now on the great River Ouse, was once a sea fareing port. If you are ever on the East coast of England, then Kings Lynn should be on a list of places to visit- it is fascinating - and YES more TE images to follow

Hi Rich,
what to do: to say what I feel about this photo .. or not to say?
I think I'd better say ;) My words will contradict the previous comments, though... a little bit :)
In the thumbnail the photo looks just great! it is very attractive... first of all, by its very rich bright colours in the upper part of the image.
But when you open it and see the large version, this impression quickly transforms into the following question: "WHY did you shoot from THIS very point of view and create such a composition??"
I say again: I know that my words will contradict all other opinions expressed before me, but I am sure this black object must not be in the foreground! just must not be there! or must not be there alone... being black and heavy, it attracts a lot of attention to itself whereas the attention is supposed to be paid to the customs house which is in the background!
I sure understand that it's a quay, and the water also should be included in the photo... but... not in this way.
I have two suggestions:
1. either you shoot a landscape (or a square) version and include another object on the right (it would be a counterbalance to this heavy black object in the FG).. For example: you take a couple of steps to the right and include in the frame one more object on the right;
2. or you shoot this house from a different POV and avoid including this black object in the photo.
by the way, you did not mention it in the note... though, I know, it is a quay!;)
well... sorry, I couldn't help it!:)
warm regards,
Elena

Hello Richard,
she's acting like judge in the court room, a very serious !!!, but this is very funny. In my opinion, I like this picture, because is a very interesting where the house is, what place. I like the architecture and the tower. Great management of light, colors, sharpness, beautiful sky. A very well done.
All the best,

Hi Richard
You have spot on expo and sharpness and vibrant colours?
The compo also has quite some depth with the mooring thing in the FG... (it actually looks like a modern sculpture!)

Hello Richard
It's true, the bollard looks like a sculpture! and this one, is, to me quite special, with its 2 "heads" ;)
The interesting thing is that it created a diagonal to the angle of the customs house. The details are nicely shown due to the good light.
Cheers

Good morning Richard,
nice the view as the presentation too of the Customs house at Kings Lynn, with the black bollard on the foreground to looks like a sculpture.I like the clarity of the image, the light and colour management, as the creative perspective.
Have a good day,danos

Hello Richard,
A fine composition featuring this rather elegant looking building. The mooring post in the foreground gives the image depth and makes an interesting pointer toward the Custom House. Excellent light, colours and clarity complete a splendid image.

Hi Richard!
First of all, I read Elena's comment and your answer to her and I really liked all that!
I also think that the black "element" is disturbing and either it shouldn't be there or it should have been placed somewhere else! Otherwise, I like the other photo qualities and think this picture is attractive and shows beautiful architectural and urban details!
I'm glad you're learning more and more and probably because TE is helping you as it does with all of us, one way or the other!
Cheers,

Hi Richard,
very cute and charming piece of architecture. It is hard to believe that people would fear such a pretty place. May be it was meant to distract the smugglers...
Very good light made the building look almost three dimensional with one side exhibiting the strong shades.
Good idea for the foreground.
Have a great weekend,

Hi Richard
i really enjoyed reading the critique from Elena. sometimes its good to get that constructive feedback.
the problem is that photography is SOOOO subjective.
after having read the note, i must admitt that i agree with Elena...a simple move to the right or left would have removed the subject from the straight ahead linear line that we see. if the subject were to be moved a bit, more balance would be seen and felt.
but you're right too, about the overall clarity and sharpness, thats all fine.
So now that this discussion has happened, you'll be more aware of composition placement...i know, its happened to me on TE before :)
keep shooting! have fun.
cheers
craig
