Photographer's Note

The sad twisted and burnt out frame of the shore end pavilion of Eastbourne Pier in East Sussex, England. I have posted images of this iconic Victorian Pier in much happier times and it is with much sadness that I have to post this one. The fire service did an excellent job containing the blaze, the cause of which is still being investigated. This part of the pier was originally a ballroom but was now an amusement arcade. You can see the frame of the ornate staircase and the blue lampposts still standing on this side of the structure. I just hope that plans to rebuild it are started without too much delay, and it does not go the way of the West Pier just a few miles up the coast in Brighton.

Hello Brian,
I was expecting you to photograph this sadly burnt out seaside icon. For so many years our family spent the New Year holiday in the hotel opposite the pier and it was a daily walk to the end whatever the weather. From what I read there should be money available to quickly restore it.
Your picture is a very clear record of the damage and you have made an artistic image from the twisted framework. The blue paintwork still shows in places and the blue lampposts appear almost undamaged.
An excellent image of a major event to hit the south coast.

a nice reportage shot that shows only too clearly the damage that can be caused by uncontrolled fire,the twisted steel girders bear testament to that.
Hopefully money will be found to repair the damage caused.

A very sad sight indeed, the last I heard the police were treating it as a case of arson. It also appears there should be no problem getting the money together to restore it to its former glory. Your image tells the tale perfectly.

This is a documentary photo and a sad view of this pier, I hope it wiil be reconstructed after the damage, very well captured

I read it in the papers that the Eastbourne pier burned down, how shocking indeed. So this is what it looks now then.
Great journalistic document. I only hope that the pier will be up and running in its old splendor soon.

It was sad to see this on the news the other day, an aerial shot from a chopper as it burned really showed its scale and elegance. A tragic documentary shot. Here's hoping soon those who enjoy its rebuilt glory can look back to your shot with wonder.
Great idea to include the staircase, in a weird way it reminds me of the titanic.

J'avais vu rapidement des images de l'incendie à la télévision mais je n'étais pas absolument sûr que c'était celle dont tu nous avis proposé de si belles photos. Un bien triste événement dont tu as fait une photo de reportage intéressante.

Hello Brian,

This is an excellent "reportage" shot of the results of last month's disastrous fire which swept through and destroyed this magnificent pier. Has it yet been confirmed that this was a case of arson or was that just an earlier conjecture?

This may indeed be a reportage shot but it is very much more than that. It does indeed show the havoc created by the fire - the entirely missing woodwork and the extensive buckling of the steel framework - but it is also a finely composed image with perfect exposure, lovely light and colours and exceptional technical quality.

Like yourself, I do hope that a successful restoration gets started very soon.

Oh, no, it's such a shame such a lovely pier has been largely reduced to a rusty skeleton. I didn't even know it happened, only now checked on BBC, having seen your photo.
It's one of my favourite piers and I share your hope it will be rebuilt soon.

Hello Brian - Funny, when I saw news of the fire on TV, I immediately thought of you and your birdcage pier at Brighton and I did wonder whether you would post a shot of this one after the fire.

I've just had another look at the previous post you uploaded of the pier which underlines the tragic loss of this fine old lady. The tangled metal contrasts sharply with the seemingly untouched blue wrought iron work.

I hope the town can raise the funds to repair this historic part of the English seaside.

Hi Brian,
The fire surely was a sad event, but that doesn't imply that it gave you an image with a great "graphic" beauty; and also very informative. The clarity and colours are great also; I see no problems in sharpness, not even in the smaller version, but that depends a lot on the monitor used.
