A very nice perspective looking down the steps across the city. This is a kind of composition that does very well in B&W. The person approaching us is a great advantage to the photo.

Bonjour Jean-Claude,
Most people reckon that beautiful Edinburgh is mostly grey, black and white - but I knwo this town so well and there are many diff. colors...
This alley, if remember right, is going downhill's from the Royal-Mile near the Castle to Johnson-Terrace than to around and near the Grassmarket. Perfect way to explore the old town from the 20+ number of coves to both sides of the Royal-Mile.

Hello Claude,

This is a fine b&w photograph.
You have shown the eclectic mix of architecture from this elevated view.
You have also intimated the possible steep hills in the city and how they have been overcome by the use of stairways! This must be so helpful to the people who reside in this area!
I like how you have included a figure mounting the stairs. He adds a scenario, especially as he is not aware of you!

Le paysage urbain est très beau en noir et blanc , mais ce qui fait le beauté de l'image c'est la silhouette de l'homme qui monte les marches sac à la main. Beau jeu d'ombre et de lumière.

Hi JC,
Good to see sunshine on this November day. I think it is important to get contrasts on a B&W picture. Excellent angle down the stairs of this classic city. Nothing looks too modern on this landscape. Not even clothes of that man. So, black and white was clearly the right choice.

A lovely impression from the narrow streets and steps in Edinburgh. The bright sunlight is wonderful and highlights the patterns and textures of the walls so well. Also the black and white helps to achieve this. The man was well included in the foreground.

Lovely - my type of photo. Excellent viewpoint, good control of bright highlights, timely arrival of silhouetted figure who is well placed, and nicely done b/w finish. I like the way the eye is drawn down to the rooftops and the distant hazy horizon. Very nicely done.

This is a lovely contre jour city shot which works so very well in black and white. You have made the very most of the strong light and deep shadows and the man approaching you up the steps is perfectly placed in the frame in this fine composition.

Fabulous light and lovely textures and contrasts, perfect exposure and exquisite details and clarity.
