Photographer's Note
These are the punts (flat bottomed boats navigated by means of a long pole) that typify many Cambridge scenes.
Unfortunatly it's not exactly punting weather at the moment so they are stored like this at the side of the Cam that runs behind many colleges (it's called the Backs surprisingly)
Tech: Channels conversion to B&W in PS + curves adjustment & crop.

A very sharp image. It's a perfect amount of sharpness. Nicely framed with the sidewalk on the right. You seem to have chosen a good channel to use for this conversion. It creates a nice, deark, moody seen, very well. I also like the lines in the water making the appearance of fast moving, somewhat turbulent water, adding to the overall mood. I'm a big fan of color so I wouldn't mind seeing what it looked like in color but the B&W conversion adds an edgy mood I don't think one could get in color. Especially if this was a very grey day. Good job

Une atmosphère tout à fait digne d`un film.
Le noir et blanc se prête merveilleusement bien pour une journée semblable.
Belle photo Richard.

What a picture! Nicely framed and well exposed. The choice of B&W is very judicious and give a very impressive atmosphere to your picture. Bravo!

Tres bon travai B&W dont Mr RB est le grand specialiste si l'on se remémore ses précédents chef d'oeuvre

Impressive tonal range and fine contrast between dark trees and smooth, shiny boats and river.

On pourrait confondre avec une toile à l'encre de chine. L'arbre au centre qui coiffe toute l'image est très réussi. Super !

I experience this as a wonderful, yet threatful picture. The dark clouds seem to come at high velocity towards the person looking at the picture (that is: me). I don't think that the Cambridge board of tourism would like these kind of pictures of their famous pittoresque boats being published ;-) Thanks for this very nice piece of art!

This is a very good b/w picture indeed Richard. Not much to – the picture speeks for itself. Very well done.

Stunning alternative view of the Cam - usually so twee, but this is a textbook example of how there is no such thing as bad weather and bad light - you have used it perfectly and made a stunning shot. Very moody and I like the sheen on the river from the slow shutter speed. Technically it is great, very sharp. I would be interested to know exactly what steps you used to convert it to black and white.

Fabulous, although I'd like to have seen a bit more of the boat. Great subject for black and white on a wet day. Well done.

Richard,
Good capture! I like how the drooping tree branches mirror the rain and how there are several points of interest in the image (tree stands out, reflection on punts, path leading into the upper right). Moody, yet almost a bit upbeat, in that (to me) the angle of the light appears to suggest that the sun may be peeking through the clouds and the rain lifting.

What a beautiful detailed and contrasty shot. I guess that's we call english weather...french people like to think that the weather across the channel is always like that ;-D Th reflections are brilliant making the picture interesting for the eye in any area.
May be coming from different monitor tuning, but I think your pic is a little dark, I've increased the overall levels from 20 and tweaked the curves in order to add a bit of contrast and that's much more pleasing. At least for me.

Amazing perspective here. I love the contrast between the feeling of softness on water and the hard and tormented shapes of the trees. I do love the reflections as well and this low sky. Fantastic mood !

Spectacular variety of textures and lines. The trees themselves seem to raining down on those flat bottomed boats. The slick bottoms of the punts and the wet walkway provide a great leading line. Well done.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this one, Richard. It is one of my favorites from your always excellent work. The fine lines of the trees are so delicate and gentle on the smooth lines of the water and grass behind. The punts make such wonderful leading lines and frames for the scene.

Richard, this image has it all. The shine off the boats reflect some light back to our eyes and bounce us up to the highly detailed tree. Most of all, the sky is filled with drama. Nice work

Hi Richard,
Came across this image as a Featured Critique on the TE front page. A thumbnail I could not resist clicking!
It's a fabulous image; it has a luminous sheen and intensity I'm not sure I've seen before - it travels well beyond it's actual subject matter (which I'm not sure I would have recognised without your explanatory note). The balance of light and shade is perfect.
It's preety good!!
Regards. Colin

Fantastic Composing Richard. The B/W selection is simply appropriate and the entire atmosphere is a bit gloomy and sad. Very well preserved.

Hi Richard,
Fantastic mood and atmosphere you've created with this image, the black & white I think really gives it that enhancement! Incredibly sharp and detailed. Impressive!
Best Regards,
Jason
