Photographer's Note

The Cairngorm plateau is a unique place in the UK. It is the largest area of arctic mountain landscape, and is the only sub-arctic ecosystem. It can snow any time of the year, and the summits have snow on for around 200 days of the year. It snows around 100 days a year. It has some of the strongest winds - the highest ever wind speed in the British Isles was recorded here - 173 mph.

The day after I took this shot we were out on the tops and the wind picked up to 125mph, which is way beyond anything I have experienced before or since. It was actually a bit frightening as we literally could not stand up. We actually had to descend most of the mountain on our bums.

4 of the highest 5 Scottish summits are in this area, with almost 50 peaks over 3000ft.
