Photographer's Note

Travels on the Silk Road:

Andrew (ACL 1978) has remarked that few pictures on post-war Iraq have been presented on TE. Here is one from Baghdad: this tomb (turbat) in the Bab-e-Wustani quarter (see Map: view) is that of an important Sufi leader. His name is Sheyk Abu Hafs Umar Suhrawardi. He died in 1234.
The mausoleum exhibits a nine-layered, cone-shaped dome (not a minaret) that rises to great height. It is done Seljuk style, featuring decorative brickwork. The light inside the vault emanates from small holes producing a glowing effect. The dome is somewhat leaning, away from the photographer.
