Travels on the Silk Road in Iraq:
The picture was taken in the Suq of modest Al-Kifl at the Euphrates (Furat) river, near Najaf (see Map View). A covered market is an age-old way to trade goods and services as witnessed here by the arched masonry roofs of Ottoman times. The exhibited women's dresses let us know that there is more to a woman than the ubiquitous black Abaya worn once outside the home. The bald guy in front holds a handy. The armed national guard represents the new order in Iraq. Al-Kifl is privy to a secret: the presumed tomb of the biblical prophet Ezekiel (Dhul Kifl in Arab), praised in the Quran. This mere fact makes you look twice at this modest and inviting Suq.
