Photographer's Note

There are two things that strike a foreigner most when visiting Jerusalem: the way the place vibrates with religion, and the ubiquity of soldiers.

This picture was taken near the Western Wall, on a Friday a few hours after some rioting had just happened in the area (Palestinians vs Israelis). I found out immediately that I was not supposed to use a camera there, the soldiers came straight to me and told me that it was the time for holy prayers, and that I should not take photos at that time. I obliged, taking account of their politeness and the size of their guns :D

I know the picture is not the best quality, but it was made kind of in a rush... Moreover, this time I just wanted to capture the association of ultra-orthodox (black suits and hats) with down-to-earth (military jackets and guns).

Perhaps some day peace will make this photo look strange. Right now, it's probably a pretty good synthesis of daily life in Jerusalem.
