Photographer's Note

Three young women leaving the Al-Aqsa Mosque. My position, looking down from above as I was walking along the ramparts to the outer wall of the Muslim Quarter, is about as close as a non-Muslim can get to the site on most days. The mosque sits atop the location of the Great Temple of Jerusalem, destroyed for the second time is 70 A.D. It is the spot of the high priest's inner sactum, the holiest of holies, where only the spiritual elite could directly confront the divine presence.
