Photographer's Note

An Israeli army patrol slowly drives through a street in Hebron, while an old Palestinian watches on. I love this picture because it captures the atmosphere of the place: eerily quiet, but with all the signs of tension.

Hebron has a heavy presence of Israeli soldiers, as you can see from their installations on the rooftops. They are there to protect a few hundred fanatic Jewish settlers, though at times they've had to protect the Palestinians from the settlers.

I spent a day in the beautifully restored but almost deserted historic center of Hebron as the sole tourist that day. The soldiers couldn't let me into the Ibrahimi mosque because it was Saturday. Regulations, apparently. A Palestinian shop-owner asked them again on my behalf, and then they checked with a superior through radio, but no go. It was interesting to see the interaction between ordinary Palestinians and ordinary Israeli soldiers though. No hostility, just meekness on one side and unease on the other.
