Photographer's Note

The Chimaera (Yanartas) is about 7 kms away from Olympos Village, near Antalya. The Turkish name means "The burning rock". The gaz escaping from the rocky formation which is around 300 meters from the sea level, burns eternally. It is said that the light formed by these flames was visible to the mariners at sea. Today, it is surrounded by beautiful forests.

It is a very beautiful and amazing experience to be there where several fires of different sizes burn continuously. They seem to come just from the inside of the rock and this created legends about its formation.

Mythological info: (Thanks to Anil Tamer Yilmaz [Thrax])
Chimaera is a mythological creature, a mixture of lion, goat and dragon, living in the Lykian region. It produces fire from its mouth. The hero named Bellerephon, with the help of pegasus, kills it by throwing big rocks upon the creature because it was a nuisance to the people. And the place that the creature died is none else than Yanartas (Chimaera). A figure depicting the killing scene can be seen in this link.
