Bicycle travel on the Silk Road:
The mosaics of wealthy Romans in Antakya (=Hatay), ancient Antioch, are absolutely sensational. The hunting scene depicts Tigers, Leopards, Lions, Wild Oxen, Pheasants Guineafowl that have meanwhile disappeared, i.e. eradicated in Turkey and the Middle East.
Ancient Antioch on the Orontes river was situated smack on the Hittite and later on the Persian Royal way but also on the ancient Silk Road to Aleppo, Baghdad, Babylon and on to Persia. The town lost its importance during the time of the Mongol conquests and of Sultan Saladin when the Silk Road passed elsewhere (Wikipedia wisdom here).
Christians know the town's name from the teachings in the Bible: the apostles Peter and Paul were missionaries here. The supposedly oldest church on Earth , the cave church of St. Peter, may date from the year 30 AD (I put "Map/View" on it).
