Akdamar Island, a photo from Van, East Anatolia

Photographer's Note

This is Akdamar Island, the 2nd largest of 4 islands in Lake Van in eastern Turkey, showing the 3 boat piers and the 10th century Armenian Church. Taken looking east. There is a barbed wire fence separating this high limestone bluff from the fruit tree orchards and church grounds but in the middle of the island is an unlocked gate which I eventually found. This was high enough for me. The trail gets rougher and steeper and more dangerous for those determined to get to the summit.

Bonjour Chris,

La distance entre la point de l'île et la rive opposée donne de la profondeur à la composition. La prise de vue permet de vue permet de voir les détails de cette partie de l'île. La qualité de la lumière embellit les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

Quel beau point de vue sur cette point qui se prolonge dans une mer aux couleurs superbes. L'ensemble est net et les couleurs semblent resplendir. J'aime les nuages en arrière plan.

Hello Chris,
I was here in 1974. I think the church has been fully restored since then (it was in a rather bad shape) and most of the island seems to have been given a face-lift. It had a general look of neglect. I didn't climb this hill so my views were less impressive. What I remember most clearly from that day is that while waiting on the mainland for a bus to take me back to Van I was told that Richard Nixon had resigned ;-).

Hi Chris!
Not easy to go to the top for sure but the view is really worth the effort. There are several boats around the island but what really draws my attention is that church in background. I like those churches and they are usually so well located. Very nice colours!

Hi Chris, It is my dream to go to the Lake Van and Nimrud Dag, but it is so far and sometimes maybe not safe. This picture reminds me the view from the Lake Sevan in Armenia,, because of the style of this church. Nice view from above.

Good morning Chris,
Seems as you had quite an ordeal getting to this high POV across the bay and over the island's small peninsula.
But it was worth the effort: the sight over the lake and places on the island, view of the church atop and green vegetation with trails crossing, made it a marvelous sight and no-less attractive photo.

You choose a nice camera angle with depth and perspective.
A lovely contrast picture with a wonderful light and colours.
