Photographer's Note
About 2500 years ago, Uighur Turks made underground water channels called 'kariz' in the Turfan region of East Turkestan. The length of these underground waterways can reach 5,000 km. Some of these karizes can be used even today. Karizes, which are horizontal underground canals, have irrigated agricultural fields that have been formed in the middle of the desert for thousands of years with a gravity-driven system without leakage or evaporation. These structure which are called kariz in Central Asia are also found in Anatolia.
Water services in Turkey were carried out by the foundations from the time of Seljuks until the time of the Republic. In 1926 all the water foundations together with their assets were transferred to the municipalities by the Law on Water Act numbered 831and published in the Official Gazette dated 10 May.
Sebils are water distribution sites which are remnants of these foundations. Stone structures generally built adjacent to mosques in a special form for distributing drinking water for charity without compensation are called sebilhane.

Hello Murat,
This is such an interesting subject.
There was a well made documentary on TV a few months ago that followed the underground waterways of Italy, which were unbelievably immense and still operational to this day. It would seem that Turks was as well versed in this practice as the Romans.
The building on the corner, very well captured, certainly seems to have stood for many hundreds/thousands of years.
There looks to be a lot of modernisation occurring in the b/g. Is that anything to do with the water supply?
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Murat,
A nice street view with this lovely piece of architecture on the corner with an interesting story behind it. The street, café and crane together make a fine background and the light and clarity are superb.

Hi Murat
Interesting narratives accompanying this street shot with the olde building draws attention livened by some good activity going on there.
PS: I remember seeing the ancient Karez water irrigation system in Turpan in 2008, whereby the melted snow from the surrounding mountains is brought down to the town in underground channels all dug by hand and stretching around some 3000km. Grape Valley is well known oasis produces the best grapes in East Turkestan which owe much to the Karez system.
Please view http://www.trekearth.com/viewphotos.php?l=7&p=1300244
how the grape vines in Toyuq viilage benefited from Karez system
Thanks for posting.
Best wishes

I admire the technical skills of our ancestors, a very interesting place, we can see the part above the ground, but the undergrounds are probably very interesting

When I see a crane erected above an old neighborhood, I guess progress has come to the place, Murat, just hope the initiative would preserve old buildings like the one we see on right here.
Fine taken from the street corner.
Good afternoon,
Ike

HI Murat,it's a pity that this great piece of art is located close to a abandoned house and isn't well preserved too. This fountain is an important piece of local history and its style is absolutely beautiful, needs a bit of respect....thanks for the interesting note and have a nice weekend,Luciano

Hello Murat I don't hnow if the old bulding dates of 500 years BC, as the kariz do, and it looks very classy with this ancient design. Could'nt find in my online turkish-english dictionnary the meaning of Sebilhane; anyway you wrote a much interesting note. Cheers

Hello Murat,
The yellow crane against the blue sky adds a nice warm cold color contrast at left. An interesting accompanying note on the water supply and drinking fountain. Good sharpness & framing. Tfs!
