Photographer's Note

These are the mosaics at the southern entrance of the narthex of Hagia Sophia. They depict the Emperor Constantine (on the right), presenting a model of the city, and Emperor Justinian (on the left), presenting a model of Hagia Sophia, to the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child.

I was pleasantly surprised that these mosaics were still visible. However, a careful examination revealed that there is a moveable screen that can be lowered to occlude the mosaics (see WS photo "Into the Narthex"). At the time of our visit, it hadn't been lowered yet.
