Photographer's Note
This mosaic is depicting the Theotokos of Protection, this is one of four mosaics is on facade of the former Slovak Cathedral of Transfiguration, in Markham, Ontario. The Theotokos of Protection is an iconographic form of the Virgin Mary, the veil in her hands symbolizes protection. The mosaics were made by a prominent Italian company, Favret Mosaici Artistici, founded in 1933 to create fine artistic mosaics. The cathedral's construction began 1984, Stephen Roman (1921-1988), a Slovak/Canadian businessman, donated the land and the money for the construction. It was the seat of the Slovak Catholic Eparchy until 2006, but at that time due to dispute about the ownership of the church the connection with the Slovak Eparchy was cut, and it is now closed. A picture of the facade of the Cathedral is shown in the Workshop.
