Au premier coup d’œil on distingue difficilement l’oiseau qui se confond avec son environnement. Les larges rayures foncées pectorales et le motif blanc et noir alterné sur la tête constituent un camouflage particulièrement efficace dans les champs labourés et sur les plages de gravier.

Le Pluvier kildir a plus d’un tour dans son sac et est expert lorsqu’il s’agit d’éloigner les intrus de son nid ou de ses petits. En cas d’attaque réelle, l’un ou l’autre parent utilisera un moyen de défense différent. Si le fait de lancer des appels bruyants et de voler autour de l’ennemi ne suffit pas à l’éloigner, l’adulte fait alors une parade de distraction au cours de laquelle il feint d’avoir une aile cassée ou d’être blessé. L’oiseau se blottit sur le sol en laissant pendre une aile comme si elle était brisée. Il sautille d’une façon pitoyable en lançant son kill-dî-î sur un ton de souffrance extrême(j'ai été témoin de tous cela lorsque je tentais de le prendre en photo).
L’intrus se dirige alors vers l’oiseau prétendument blessé ou réduit à l’impuissance, qui parvient toujours à s’éloigner, entraînant l’ennemi de plus en plus loin du nid et des petits. Lorsque ces derniers semblent hors de danger, l’adulte se remet miraculeusement et s’envole. Durant tout ce temps, les oisillons restent immobiles ou s’éparpillent dans toutes les directions. D’une façon ou d’une autre, ils sont par la suite presque introuvables.

At first glance we hardly see the bird which merges with its environment. The pectoral dark stripes and the white and black alternated design on its head constitute a particularly effective camouflage in the plowed fields and on the gravel beaches.

The Little-ringed Plover is a smart bird and an expert when it is time to move away the intruders from his nest. In a case of real attack, the male or the female will use different means of defense. When launching noisy calls and flying around the enemy is not enough to move the enemy away, the plover makes a parade of distraction during which he pretends to have a broken wing or to be wounded. The bird crouches on the ground while letting hang a wing as if it were broken. He hops in a pitiful way while launching its « kill-dî-I » on an extreme way of suffering (I witnessed that when I was taking shots of it).
The intruder moves then towards the bird allegedly wounded or reduced to the impotence, which always manages to move away, attracting the enemy further from the nest. When the babies seem out of danger, the plover recovers and flies away. During all this time, the babies remain motionless or scatter in all directions. In a way or another, they are almost untraceable thereafter.

Le gravier cadre bien l'oiseau. La prise de vue permet de distinguer les détails et les couleurs du Pluvier Kildir. La bonne luminosité met en valeur les couleurs de l'image. Bon weekend.

Il est très joli cet oiseau. Ton cadrage est très intéressant pour démontrer à quel point cet oiseau se fond dans son environnement. La photo est très nette et j'aime son oeil qui est particulièrement perçant.

Nature can be very intriquing as you have described in your note, the bird trying to draw attention away from it's babies, but also the way this blends into the scenery. I like how clearly the eye shows up. Nice capture. TFS

Il a un talent de politicien pour la diversion car il expose son plumage flamboyant normalement caché par les ailes cassées et son dos brun qui est ici hérissé!
Je suppose qu'il fixe l'ennemi de cette façon pour vérifier l'efficacité de sa ruse, quitte à "beurrer plus épais" au besoin!

It's hard to perceive that it is a bird in the thumbnail, as despite of its beauty it is also very effectively camouflaged. I like how you framed it with the little green sprouts and the rocks make an interesting pattern. Great light and sharpness!

Hi Denis. We have little plovers here too, slightly lighter in colouring though and ours nest in the same environments and pull the same tricks. Fascinating to witness. Great photo, excellent sharpness and colours. Nice work and thanks for sharing.

This is a wonderful sharp shot of the Plover doing the "broken wing" dance. Good catchlight in the eye. I think I would have cropped off the right side just behind the small plant to get rid of the out of focus FG plant. What do you think?

J'adore ta publication car je découvre là un oiseau que je ne connaissais pas. En voyant la vignette je m'interrogeais sur l'oiseau présenté.
Ta note concernant le Pluvier kildir est très intéressante et instructive. Tu me parais un très bon ornithologue.
L'image quant à elle est superbe, d'une netteté parfaite.
