Photographer's Note
This is my fourth posting of the Vancouver TE Meeting from last Sunday. I found it to be a real learning and enjoyable experience with fellow Trekearth photographers. I found this to be an interesting study in exposure. Here ares some considerations.
One of the most important aspects of good photography is to simply learn how to see the light. Of all the photos I took at the waterfront this one stands out above the rest for one simple reason. And that is the light intensity in the sky and colors captured in the water. The lighting in this frame takes on a wonderful appeal because part of the direct sunlight is blocked by some of these buildings to create a certain amount of dynamic lighting. And also just enough shadow lighting to bring in the details of the boats on the waterfront. Not too much adjusting needed here. I think that one of these boats might be Jimmy Pattison's yacht in the bay. Enjoy the view!

Hi Paul, tack sharp my friend. What sharpening do you use? The exposure is very well done. Take care, Don.

Paul,
I think you're right that blocking the sun from the shot makes a huge difference here. Otherwise, the contrast would dissapear from the sun flare. And that is why we all love shooting mornings and evenings!
Nice exposure.
Cheers,
Andrew.

I like the light in this a lot too, and I find that generally the water there and also in False Creek can give some fantastic reflections. The huge dynamic range is difficult to handle, but the results can be beautiful, like in this shot! Merry Christmas Paul!

Hi Paul, wow, I was never aware that TE has a meeting. What kind of meeting? Is it annual meeting? How many participants? I would love to join the meeting. Cool. And thanks for your great lesson about the lighting. Here your lighting is great...wonderfully examplified the lesson. Well done. Sothy

Hi Paul. I definitely remember those green glass buildings. You've got the silhouettes in full effect in this one. You're right about the light being so very nice. Merry Christmas!

Hello Paul,
Thanks for your very helpful and informative notes. I liked stunning reflections and colors on water a lot. White band at middle of frame and its different white tones are dazzling. Skyscraper and cloudy sky are really splendid. Congratulations.
I would like to wish to you and your family a joyful and peaceful holiday season, and a prosperous New Year.
Best Regards,

Hello Paul -
You are right about the lighting conditions. I particularly like the glow in the clouds and the reflections in the water. It looks like the only thing you could do was block the sun with the buildings but IMO the flare is just a little too bright and contrasty. I say this because the flare seems always draw the eyes to it even when trying to focus on other details. This is a well composed and executed image. Well done!
Thank you for sharing and Happy Holidays

Hello Paul. This looks much better than the thumbnail suggested it might be. Beautiful, well detailed shot that benefits from the low ISO. The scene has a starkness softened by the beautiful light in the sky and the reflection. Long may you continue to upload what I think are the best landscapes on TE.
Happy Christmas to you and your family.

Andrew

Hi Paul,
A superb lesson on exposure levels. You did well to capture this with so much good reflected light in the water and very limited glare from that patch of hot sky that dogged us. I also like the way you framed this, with the building jutting in on the left and providing good balance. All the best of the holiday season to you and your family, Paul.

Hi Paul,
These relfections in the foreground are just perfect, with impressive texture.
As you wrote it, you made perfect use of this difficult light.
Good job,
JB.

Hi Paul - I like how the skyline has retained so much detail while at the same time the sky is dark enough, the sharp reflections complete the picture below.

Hello Paul.
The golden hue through the shot really gets me. The water looks like liquid gold of different compositions. The burst of light just behind the buildings is also very well captured. There is an intensity here, like the time just after a storm. Nicely balanced as well.
How was your Christmas, hope Santa was good to you and your family?

Hi Paul,
you have so many fine images to chose from that eventually I settled on this one, mainly because low light shooting is a bit of a mystery to me (as are most things technical from a camera!) This is a perfectly balanced composition. There are some very hard lines in it but well offset by the softness of the sky and the reflections in the foreground. I was looking for your camera settings, hopefully to learn from the master! A superb capture and well seen.

Stephen

Hi Paul,
Another nice view from this meeting, I like here the warm glow on both sides of the skyline thanks to the reflection, you were not fooled by this big bright area and managed to show rich details of the boats and skyline.
I wish you Merry Christmas and a good move into 2007,
Jean-yves
