Photographer's Note
Again "Le Carnaval de Québec" - Quebec's winter carnaval- is upon us. For the next two weeks a million people from many parts of the world will visit all the activities that this festival offers.
This is a the very popular dog sled race. It's run in the old city on a 5 kilometre track. They bring in over a hundred trucks of snow to give the rider a track. The funny thing is that a one point the city paid to have the snow removed, then they put it back for the race and then they take it away once more... ;-)
I took around 200 shots of the race, many closes up of the mushers and there dogs. I like this one because it gives a general idea of what the old city turns into for that event. Hope you enjoy it as well.

I like the Cartier-Bresson type framing around the photo and the interplay of colors - the clothing worn by spectators and participants, and the snow. I have been on that street where the photo was taken, though never in winter, so it's a different ambiance altogether.

I once visited the Stampede in Calgary, and love the festive mood there... Your picture expresses the same kind of feeling, even when the temperatures differ enormously :-) How cold was it? Are your fingers still a live? It is a wonderful shot, and the note is as well

Bonjour Paul,
Bonne soiree,
Jean-Yves

Hi Paul. A beautiful scene from the dog sled race, that gives a vivid impression of this festival. The slight diagonal made by the "race track", and the crowds of spectators add up to a colorful and vivid composition amidst the old-town setting. Great light you had for this one. Hope you'll show us more from the carnaval soon.

Bravo Paul,
You took this image of a street in Quebec, showing us hussle & bussle around the event.
Very good crop that reveals many details on the street.

Through your lens the Canadian cold winter looks like a great happy event, Paul - always carnivals, racing, winter sports and celbrations etc. A very nice action shot this time. It looks freezing, but seems that nobody cares about it.

Great shot, Paul. Very well captured, considering all the action. I like the way the sled run and the crowds stretch 'up' in to the distance. The old city wall and decorative shop signs really add to the composition. Well framed.

Bonjour Paul;

Bien vu !

I think it’s very interesting how the Carnival in Quebec becomes so sportive! This one is a very good image portraying very nicely the action and activity. Even if the crowd is not very colorful their fluorescent clothes add some originality. Good placement of the road which crosses gently in a diagonal the whole image.

Hi Paul
I was one of those million people to visit this place one week after you took this photo ... I would definitely consider this photo to be one of the best 25 photos in your gallery ... but I just have a quick question here .... how were you able to take this photo from some height ... was there some platform or did you use some some telephoto.
Very good composition and great capture of the spirit of carnaval
Amities .... Sarju
PS: I have to tell you a short story here ... the first night we reached the city, i was telling my friend ... "Look at all the drunk people on the street" .... well the next day we were one of them ... good times
