Photographer's Note
This is a shot of people training the ice canoe race that will be held on the last day of the Carnival. It’s the biggest event of the whole thing. I will try to get some photos of the race for you guys.
I have posted a workshop with a more general view of the area so you can get an idea of how dangerous this sport can be. But I prefer this one because you can actually see the size that the ice gets around them and I feel it’s more dramatic. Let me know what you think.
Last year I asked for volunteers to make a Trek Earth team for the race. Nobody seemed interested. Any takers for next year ;-)

I'm glad you explained what they were doing otherwise I never would have figured it out. Oh you crazy canucks! you captured this odd sport quite well, and thanks for sharing something that I had never seen before!

Very interesting photo. When I saw the thumbnail I was wondering what was going on? You could've improved the shots by having them lower in the frame..
And i would like to volunteer for participation in this interesting sport. But I must say I have no experience of this sport.

Nice photo that show the size of the ice chunks compared to the canoe. This is now a sport but it used to be a way of life for the inhabitants of the islands in the St-Laurence River east of Quebec City.

Will agree with Anil, it would have made a better shot to have the boat on the bottom left corner with space ahead. But anyways, this is a great TE shot and I wish I could take part in this sport if I were anywhere near Quebec.

Well done, I like the snow formation and also the guys seem to be struggling a bit, but I like it, well done

Wow - excellent shot, Paul. The shapes created by the ice make for a good geometrical impact, and the folks in the boat are well positioned in the scene, and at a good diagonal perspective. The whole scene looks genuinely cold indeed. The WS view is also impressive, with the other boat seen in the wider angle. Well done (no, I'm still not participating ;-)

Well composed with the diagonal slant of the canoe and the slight of center position. The surrounding iceformations makes the men look small indeed and I think it was good of you to include a lot of ice to increase that feeling.
I have tried something similar in the winter of 1980 as part of my military training, it can be quite a thrill...

I am sorry that I can't join your team, Paul, but this seems to cold and to risky for me.
But it's a wonderful, well lit and very well captured shot. The angle is amazing, and the sapes of the ice are amuzing. Very good shot, keep on the great time.

I had miss this one Paul,
Again a good action shot, very nice with that boat, that shadow from the ice, and a nice contrast in the photo too, very good job

Bonjour Paul,

Very well done.
Bien amicalement.

Hooo Hisse !

Hi Paul, nice action shot, and what these people are doing seems to me like an impossible and dangerous task. Nice colours and contrast between the ice, the canoe and the people. Well captured!

Yes very dramatic winter sports shot. I can't actually imagine what the sport involves. Is the idea that it's a mixture of paddling and running across the ice with the canoe, or is the idea to try and stay on the ice?

Excellent shot, Paul. Good point of view. The large pieces of ice in the bottom right corner are very impressive - some even look bigger than the men. You captured the action of the people training very well. Nice framed.

Amicalement.

I would never stop being amazed by the creativity of mankind for finding various activiteis that can bring high levels of adrenalin in the blood...:-)) Terrific capture, Paul! Actually I love both - the main pic and the one in WS, as both bring different accent on details but on the same subject: the risk of the moment and the boldness in doing it! The very good framing allows to underline the contrast between the rough texture of ice blocks and the yellow canoe with people in black. Excellent!

I believe you’ve posted another image from his event in the other year. Something related with the mental health of these sportsman or something… ;-)
And this is another good view of them. I do find impressive the ice shapes and textures and understand how hard and dangerous this must be. Very good colors and details. About the framing I think that if they would be more to the top left corner, exploring the icy landscape in the bottom part the image could be even stronger.
