Photographer's Note

I scanned my 1959 photos of a discount department store now because it was closed on December 31, 2016, and its area will be redeveloped. A lot of people including myself feel sorry to see it go, it was a Toronto landmark, opened in 1949 at the intersection of Bloor and Bathurst streets of Toronto, and operated by a flamboyant American-Canadian businessman, Edwin "Honest Ed" Mirvish, (1914 – 2007), until his death. The picture was taken during one of his Dance Marathons. Two other pictures in the Workshop shows the store inside, with one of the tired couple dancing for the big prize, and the many people shopping during the all night event. The place was a magnet for new immigrants and the poor people, and noted for its outrageous and humorous signs. It was a unique place and very special good man who created it.
