Photographer's Note

The original panel was of marble, and dates from the first century BCE. It was found in Herculaneum, an upscale Roman settlement south of Mt. Vesuvius and currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Eos is the Greek Goddess of the Dawn and she is depicted in her chariot, its horses at the ready for another day of travel. The stable hand struggles to get out of their way. Herculaneum (Ercolano in Italian) experienced the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE.
