Photographer's Note
To continue in the Spring Planting Series , this is a six-row seeder for planting corn.Double tires are added to the tractor to lessen the soil compaction of the soft seedbed prepared from previous harrowing.
The large bins in the front of the seeder are used for placing fertilizer beside the seeds, which are placed in the soil from the rear bins.About 30,000 seeds are required for each acre planted in rows that are 30 inches apart.
With any luck with the summer weather, this field will provide a bountiful yield in the fall.
Just as an added note , the person doing the planting is a neighboring farmer who does some custom work to help out other farmers with a heavy workload of spring planting...sharing equipment among farmers( for a reasonable fee) is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to buying very expensive new equipment.Pierre's father was one of many European farmers who have moved to Canada in recent decades, mostly from Holland,Switzerland and France. He moved here from a small farm in Holland and over the years he and his two sons have built up their farm as a model for others to follow.A few years ago Ferme Leo Jacobs et Fils won the Gold Medal as the best run farm in the province of Quebec.Their Holstein cows are exported all over the world, included back to their native Holland.

I've missed all the previous photos in this series, but I'm glad I found them now. I like the wide angle here, it gives a nice photojournalistic touch to the picture. Proportions between sky, earth and tractor are good. It might have been nice if you waited for him half a lap so that you could get sun on the front of the tractor instead.

Very interesting note to go along with the very nice picture, Derek! Fine composition of tractor traces and layers of sky, trees and soil. The planting equipment and the man behind the wheel are the details that make it live. Very well done!
