Photographer's Note

…it’s King Nyani. :-)

Last week I visited Hudson Yards on the west side of Manhattan, and I was happy to photograph this giant, bronze gorilla. He’s the largest bronze gorilla in the world, and he’s temporarily on display in the area. His measurements are 8.5 feet (2.6 meters) tall and 22.9 feet (7 meters) long.

King Niyani (Swahili for gorilla), is the work of Australian artists Gillie and Marc Schattner, who have dedicated their lives to saving endangered species through their artworks. This particular sculpture is based on the head of a family of mountain gorillas that the couple met during their travels in Africa. King Niyani will help raise awareness and funds for the endangered gorilla species.

Lots of visitors come to see the sculpture, and sit in his hand, so I decided to capture some of them. King Niyani was very friendly and accommodating. :-)
