These winter picture middle of summer perhaps good for people that the warmest day of the year can cool down.

I took these picture 2009 January 9 in the Netherlands, Sluis in Zeeland.
During a long period of strong frost, a very misty morning.
I stood above on the bridge for these picture, the different skaters gave a signal as thanks for the picture.

I have cropped this image to a "carper" format almost square

Prachtig beeld van de vaart. Eerst even proberen of het ijs wel stevig genoeg is moet die mens daar rechts denken. Het is een heel mooi sfeerbeeld met die lichte mist erbij. Weinig volk ook als je ziet hoeveel er op zaten. Ik vermoed dat dit was toen het nog niet was vrijgegeven. Merci voor dit fris cadeautje; morgen zeggen ze dat het de warmste dag van het jaar wordt.

Hi John,

A nice way to cool off a hot summer day. The presence of the skaters has an effect of scale. The frost on the trees and on the vegetation is an asset to the composition. The point of view leads our eyes to infinity which is giving depth and perspective to the photo. The reflection of the light on the ice is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi John,
It must be a special experience to skate or even walk on a frozen canal as it doesn't happen so often nowadays. Strong perspective. All the signs left to ice by skaters add interest. And frost makes this nicely luminous.

Not that I really like to be reminded of winter, but this is a very fine shot anyway. A terrific, diagonal perspective with great depth, the canal lost in the distant haze. It was taken on one of those winter days when the world seems to be in black and white, which enhances the few available colours so much more.

You had already been the master of those canals, and by the time, you studied on people photography. And now you combine those two powerful elements, and get a very very beautiful result. Indeed, when you add those tiny figures, your photo become much more beautiful for my taste. And maybe this is because i love Bruegel, and now your photo is very close to a Bruegel painting. Wow John!

Impressive to say the least. I read somewhere that the canals rarely freeze over so you can sky on them but you have shown that statement to be wrong. I see this is a color image, at first look I took it to be a B&W. Did you consider a B&W as it sure looks like it could work. I think a B&W would have a timeless feel to it. Well done! I like this a lot.

Hier sta ik toch even van te kijken. Na zo’n heerlijke zonnige zomerdag (veel zon, beetje wind, niet te heet) krijg ik toch enige koude rillingen bij deze overigens schitterende winterprent. En een winter met voldoende dik ijs op de vaarten en kanalen is ook wel weer erg aantrekkelijk.

This is one of the most beautiful shots on Trekearth. The lack of color accentuates the frigid conditions. The composition and framing are perfect.

I had missed this one and it's really so good!
The frozen canal with the long rows of frozen trees is fine enough but the skates add dynamism to the image.
The haze makes a wonderful winter atmosphere.

Hello John, At this time of year this picture looks like it belongs on my side of the world but I think another several months and Sluis will look like this again. I like the perspective and clarity in this winter scene with the the line of trees disappearing in the distance, the haze adds to the mood.

Wat een idee om midden in de zomer al weer met de winter bezig te zijn!
Als fotograaf kan dat natuurlijk heel goed.
De plaat, mooi in vierkant formaat, geeft de sfeer van de Nederlandse winter perfect weer.
Het perspectief is als altijd weer helemaal oke!!

This is lovely John and I like the 'carper crop'. It has great depth with the trees vanishing into the distance and the skaters give it a very good scale too. The whole image is enhanced by the frost on the trees but it looks sooooo cold!

This the best photo on the page John...it is really is...its funny..youve been around with the camera alot more than me...alot more than anyone else on TE..around you..read this -

its really not about you always and the equipment that you are carrying..its really about what is beyond your control..the light..the place..

If you allow me the other photos over a few pages in your gallery are average compared to this one..you set standards and you produce something like this..which stands out like the pole star...

what do u make of that..

this reminds me of a HCB frame where a old man stands wearing an overcoat with a big mustache..did he have a stick ?..the perspective was different ofcourse..

the final presentation..the elements..who ever said life in black and white is more objective...this is shades of grey and i dont have a problem with..

The icy cold tones are perfect, it's such a nice crisp winter picture. The lines of trees disappear into an imaginary point, just the right amount of mist to fade them into infinity.

It's not winter I know, but this shot is fascinating, you got the skater at the very right moment. It must have been very cold that the canal was frozen. Pfff,ik ben blij dat het nog niet zo ver is John,persoonlijk ben ik niet zon najaars en winter persoon.
Maar als het dan toch moet ,dan maar flink ijs,want dat heeft toch wel zn charmes,zoals je hier aantoont.
