Photographer's Note
The term "High Water Mark" is used to denote the location and time of the greatest military advancement made by the Confederate army during the course of the American Civil War.
The Confederate High Water Mark is located in a small stretch of earth known as the "Angle" on Cemetery Ridge, just south of Gettysburg. It was here on July 3, 1863 that the Union Army repulsed the Confederate charge led by General George Pickett.
Pickett's Charge was one of the greatest military disasters of the American Civil War. In the span of a single hour, all of Pickett's regimental commanders were killed or wounded. Front line casualty rates reached 70%. When Pickett reached the safety of Seminary Ridge, his commanding general Robert E. Lee instructed him to gather his division and prepare for a counterattack. To this Pickett replied, "General Lee, I have no division."

Very nice. Poignant comment. It seems incomprehensible now that the United States could ever have been so divided. On the other hand, reading some of the vicious comments off blogs like daily kos and move-on dot org make one wonder how close we are to a second civil war.

Hi Linda. I remember when I went through the Gettysburg battlefield in 2000, I didn't know how to photograph it in a way that makes sense. I think your variant here is very good, not least due to the special atmosphere with the red tones in the sky, and the slight hint of haze. Also, the compositional simplicity of the single statue above the gentle landscape works fine, as does the panoramic crop.

Linda,
you seem not be active on TE anymore, maybe I can persuade you once more . . . . . :)
I always like your photo's and the complimentary notes.
Last year I read about the history of the American Civil War, and it is nice to see a photo of the place.
The composition is good, the layers and the detail are all well balanced. The sun behind the statue and the intense colors of the sunset.
TFS,
David
