Heaven for Ice Climbers, a photo from Pennsylvania, Northeast

Photographer's Note

The Nockamixon Cliffs soar 300 feet (90 m) above the Delaware River and are one of two designated Pennsylvania state park natural areas. Because the cliffs face north, any moisture that collects on them freezes relatively quickly in cold weather to form these spectacular "ice falls". Ice climbers frequent these falls in the winter and are treated to a lovely view of the Delaware River and the surrounding valley.

The properties than run along the top of these cliffs are privately owned with no public access, so the only way to get to the top is by climbing. And specifically, ICE climbing. I spoke with some ice climbers (I arrived there too late to get a photo of them climbing) who had just finished their descent and was told that the rocks are not stable enough for rock climbing. So the only way to get to the top is by climbing ice!

It's a pity, Linda that you couldn't get the climbers within your pic. Anyway its a sharp pic but a bit empty if you know what I mean.

Interesting shot, Linda, even without the climbers. The staggered shapes of the frozen cascades, and the way in which they are hugging the steep hillside, is nicely conveyed by your upward shooting angle. Perhaps a touch of contrast would bring some more definition into the surface texture of the ice.

Hi Linda. Without some climbers to provide scale, I agree with Erik that this feels a bit empty, but is nevertheless a very interesting photograph (especially for someone living in a country where the only ice we see is in the fridge!). Exposure is just right. Cheers . . . david
