Photographer's Note
This was taken at the Vietnam War Memorial on a recent trip to the Mall area in Washington DC. I've visted this memorial a couple of times in the past and each time it strikes me as particularly effective, it's simplicity and scale really have a strong impact.
I hadn't noticed the reflective nature of its surface in the past, probably due to the weather when I've been there before. It was a bright sunny day and so the reflections were particulary strong, and thought this would be quite an effective way of photographing the memorial.
I stood close to the memorial wall and looked along it, aiming to take up the entire shot with the wall itself whilst including reflections of the people looking at it. Tried to keep the immediate foreground nice and sharp, but used a relatively short depth of field so that the names would lose focus towards the back of the shot hoping it would emphasise the number of names.
Used a circular polarizer in order to balance visibility of the names and the strength of the reflection.
As always, please let me know what you think!
Cheers
Simon

"we got the wall of DC to remind us all that you can't trust freedom when it's not in your hands..." (Guns n Roses - Civil War)
I like the use of marble to reflect the shapes of the visitors...it creates a link between these people and those who lost their lives in that dirty war

Hello Simon,
I agree with your assessment of this memorial, it is simple and the architectural design is effective. I like how you composed this with emphasis on the reflection. Although I live within walking distance from this memorial, I rarely visit the place. Your photo compels me that I should visit it more often and try a new perspective. Well done.
