Photographer's Note
I re-did this photo based on Sam's critique for the orginal image. I like this version more because it's easy to read the "No Vacancies" sign, and you still get the closed off feel with the black bars. What do other people think?

It's tough enough finding housing in the college town of Berkeley. It was even worse during the dotcom times of a few years ago. The sign next to the phone says, "No vacan(c)ies - Don't Bother Mgr."

I definitely like this crop better. I don't think you lose any of the atmosphere of the image, and you make the key elements (sign and locked gate) more bold.

I agree the tighter crop makes for a more powerful and interesting image.

I like this crop a lot more. Concentrates on the subject. (What happened to Sam's original critique?)
