Photographer's Note

I usually despise contrails in my photos, but in this case I liked how the the lines run parallel and perpendicular against each other.

This view is looking westward from Lee Vining toward the Sierra Nevada range. We had just crossed through Tioga Pass hours before, and stopped at Mono Lake for short time. It's quite surprising how quickly subalpine meadows turn to desert scrubs once you top the Pacific crest. The mountains are sufficiently high to block nearly all moisture from reaching east of the range.
