Photographer's Note

The John Muir Trail starts in Yosemite Valley and ends here at Mt. Whitney, named after Josiah Dwight Whitney the first Director of the California Geological Survey. This California State group was before the U.S. federal government's Wheeler Survey Group, starting in 1860. Whitney became the State's 'geologist' and would proclaim John Muir 'an amateur' being self schooled. The two would differ mightily on the creation of Yosemite Valley. Whitney said Yosemite was created by a cataclismic fault dropping the floor down. Muir having studied the mountains and rocks in person reasoned the Valley was carved by glacial action. Today, scientists know glaciers were responsible.
