Photographer's Note

Founded by Father Junipero Serra (see statue of Fr. Serra in photo; identical ones popping up at other missions) Sept. 1, 1772, Mission San Luis, Obispo de Tolosa (named after Saint Louis, Bishop of Toulouse, France) was the fifth mission established in California. This mission marks the physical halfway point in the California mission chain. The first roof tiles in California were manufactured here by the missionaries to protect the mission from fire raids by unfriendly natives. The present building was built 1793-1794. The front portico was added in 1794, torn down in 1877, restored in 1933. This is a difficult building to photograph because of all the large trees surrounding it and the terrain, which drops steeply down to the creek below. Location: in the city of San Luis Obispo at Monterey and Chorro Streets.

Uploaded for the Missions of California group theme.

Technical: Sharpened.
