Photographer's Note
I have seen these birds a number of times over the years, but never really knew much, other than I supsected that they were some sort of Sandpiper. I did a little research and this is what I found….
This bird is a Whimbrel, a type of Curlew, and is found along both coasts, as well as in the interior regions. It is numerous because of its wary behavior and the remoteness of its nesting grounds in the Arctic tundra. Like many other birds that breed on the tundra, those in the East fly offshore over the Atlantic during their autumn migration to South America, returning in spring mainly along an interior route.

Hi Ned
very impressiv use of DOF ... I love your composition but the bird seems a bit out of focus to me, I would have liked to see a sharper focus (or maybe it is just me)
it is a great composition nevertheless and thanks for sharing ... cheers

Hi Ned,
The DOF was impressively used here. It really brings the bird to the stage.
Well Done

Hi Ned. Nice result you got with the looong focal length in this one. The bird is well placed in the frame, and the shallow DOF works fine to isolate him well from the surroundings. I think for shooting this one hand-held the sharpness is absolutely commendable.

Hi Ned thanks for stopping by my site yesterday. I see you like birds and shoreline scenery. You have a nice gallery showing lots of nature. Well I guess you used a tripod on this one. Nice sharp photo in such a rugged place. Very interesting beak too. Cheers Paul
