For me, one of the best things about the beach is beach combing, especially when the beach is punctuated with tidepools. Often many creatures can be found, including various fishes, crabs, snails, starfishes and many many other creatures. In this pool are various snails, hermit crabs, periwinkles, and who knows how many other creatures hiding in the cracks and crevices.


This, what I believe to be a Striped Shore Crab was a monster for its particular specie. While trying to identify it, I read that it usually only grows to about 1 7/8 inches, but this one it seems was closer to three inches. These crabs live on rocky and hard-mud shores; in tidepools, mussel beds, bays and estuaries; often well above low-tide line. They range from Oregon to Baja California. This crab spends at least half its time on land, but submerges now and then to wet its gills and feed.
