Photographer's Note

We Europeans tend to compare the USA to other countries in Europe. But let’s be honest, the size matters. It makes more sense to compare European countries rather to US states. California for many reasons is a very different state from the rest of the US. California itself is quite diverse. The funniest way sometimes locals divide the state is into So-Cal and Nor-Cal. This refers of course to the Southern and Northern California respectively. South part of the state is so much sunnier and warmer with abundance of sandy beaches, while the north is chilly with more frequent fogs and rather dramatic coast. Interestingly, you can easily distinguish people from So-Cal from people from Nor-Cal. People from the south tend to wear shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops, while people from the north are clothed warmer and wear more often sport shoes.

Further south along the Californian coast, just north of San Diego, you can find Torrey Pines State Reserve (in this photo), in which there are some beautiful hikes on colourful cliffs with stunning views to the Pacific Ocean.
