Photographer's Note

Since my TE account serves as something of a travel diary, even if I somewhat infrequently post due to time pressures, I decided to scan and post this photo, which is decidedly an older one as it represents something of the end of an era: this landmark was recently closed, as of December 8, 2015, I think. It was a see-and-be-seen place even back in the day, but it was a well-known hangout with the grunge and later the hipster scene in Seattle. Fortunately and unfortunately, in terms of economics, it was never terribly popular with tourists, remaining one of the true local hangouts and it was rarely crowded, the few times I visited. Located on Capitol Hill, one of the most coveted spots was outside at these tables when the weather was good. Comments on various website venues range from "textbook hipster location" to "built on solid quality coffee" and an overall great hangout or just a place to relax and read a book. Some even said "this place serves REAL coffee," as opposed to the crap sold at chain stores... OUCH, and that's a pretty tall order for Seattle.

I came across the following posting on seattle.eater.com. It was apparently posted on the door as well as the FB page: it reads as follows:

"Dear loyal Bauhaus Capitol Hill Customers,

"We are truly sorry to let you know that the Capitol Hill Bauhaus had to close it's doors. The plan was for this space to be our temporary home until the original space was to be ready for us to move back. Unfortunately, we are not able to move back to our original location.

"We really tried our best to make this space work as Bauhaus Capitol Hill's temporary home, but due to unforeseen events and the knowledge that we are not able to move back to our original home, we are forced to close our doors.

"We are extremely sad and sorry this is the situation. Bauhaus has been a Capitol Hill staple since 1993 and will live on in spirit. The Capitol Hill community was our first family and we thank you and will miss you all."

The owners had a couple of other locations, including two other Bauhaus coffee and a restaurant, but apparently decided to give it up completely. Thanks for the memories, BB&C; you'll be sorely missed.
