Photographer's Note

Daily life... sort of. Didn't know which category to put this one in! I'm somewhat surprised that there don't seem to be any photos of this site, as often as it's visited in Seattle. This is Lake View Cemetery, the final resting place of many famous Seattle residents, including Bruce Lee and his son Brandon, the red and black (respectively) markers seen in the foreground.

This historic cemetery was founded atop Capitol Hill in 1872. It was first known as the Seattle Masonic Cemetery, but became Lake View Cemetery in 1890 to service the needs of a rapidly expanding population. It still isn't all that large: it is comprised of about 40 acres and has an estimated 40,000 graves. It is situated in a fairly quite and affluent neighborhood with homes adjacent. Some of its more notable interments include Princess Angeline, the daughter of the city's namesake Chief Sealth, Walter Beals, a chief justice of the Washington State Supreme Court and a presiding judge at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials (1946-7), and various Seattle pioneers. Perhaps its most famous permanent residents these days are Bruce Lee, the actor and martial arts legend, who died in 1973 of an allergic reaction to a medication at the age of 32, and his son Brandon, who was killed in a tragic accident while filming the movie The Crow in North Carolina in 1993, at age 28.
