Photographer's Note
Monument Valley needs no introduction. Anyone who has seen a Hollywood Western has seen Monument Valley. It also features in many advertisements and brochures as well as being popular on TE.
It is a Navajo Tribal Park, just a small part of the Navajo Reservation. The road from Mexican Hat is still in Utah, but the park is over the state border in Arizona, although it uses Utah time.
There is a lot of evidence of Anasazi occupation in the form of pueblo dwellings and petroglyphs, up until about AD1300, but no-one knows when the Navajo first arrived there. The mesas and buttes were formed by uplift caused by underground pressure. Cracks and gullies resulted and erosion wore down the layers of softer rock.
We had booked a sunrise and sunset photographic tour from home. The tours take you to places that you are not allowed to go on your own. We met our Navajo Guide at 5:45am, and he took us to Totem Pole to wait for the sunrise. It was just Rob and me, but while we were there, a small group arrived on another tour, and as the sun came up, someone was playing a pipe, which sent shivers down the spine!
It is possible to view Totem Pole from the 17mile self-guided loop drive, but not this close. The butte to the right is called Yei Bi Chei. Totem Pole is 450ft tall and has been used for a car advertisement when the car was helicoptered on to the top of it.
This shot was taken at 6:30 before the sun came up and is a merged image from two different exposures. The exposure details on the left are for the foreground.(actually 20secs but that option is not available) The shutter speed for the sky was 1.3 seconds. One of the first ones I took is in total silhouette and is in the WS

Hello Kath,
Remarkable, dramatic silhouettes against the early morning light. The small bushes fill the foreground and make it interesting, they also create depth. A very well balanced composition.

A great composition with excellent lighting. I like the detail in the foreground vegetation which adds depth to the scene as well as making an interesting contrast with the silhouetted rocks in the background.

Hi Kath!!
there are lots of pictures of this fantastic place here in TE, also mine!, but this one is one of the better! I love the silhouette, herbs in the foreground, and subset light - everyting very sharp!
You make me remember the Navajo guide friendly but looking drunk, driving in a foolish speed over the hills, in a cold cold wind! This happened because another guy of my group deccided to go there driving our car by himself, following the Navajo car!! Nothing worse, our Navajo driver became so upset ...!
Anyway, the place is one of the most fine in the world, I'll rememebr it forever!
Ciao!

Excellent HDR-like production to show this lovely FG while keeping these impressive silhouettes against the gradient of colour in the sky. Just yesterday I've seen "3.10 to Yuma" (the old one), so the silhouettes look quite familiar... :))

Hello Kath,
Une étrange exposition qui te permet d'obtenir un avant plan illuminé et un arrirère plan sombre.
Le ciel est magnifique et ces sculptures naturelles découpent l'azure de très belle manière.
C'est superbe.

hello Kath
Amazing to me to find the FG light on the bush of tiny flowers of dry land able to show such sharp details as if it is normal daylight, yet a short distance down the way, the mountain rocks start to appear in shadow and silhouette form which drastically stand up so well to the morning sky of orange/blue mix tones which I find would already make the scenery superbly attractive. The feature of rising up rock mountain is something that works magic here in the shadow and backed up by such a incredible morning sky, really.
I wonder how the shot could be f/18 and 22s...perhaps my specific question of interest will be where was your focus point for meter exposure?
Excellent work.
Greetings from Borneo.

Hello Kath! I have given up smoking but this is the country to smoke a Malboro, leaning against one of these rocks, holding still for a moment, enjoying the silence and inhale :))) Just kidding, all unhealthy and I guess I never touch these things again. You had many early mornings during your trip but I mean the light was worth every effort and some extra $$ spent on your guide. This is such a special light here, it gives a strange color to the sand that I really love. Wonderful the remaining night blue and how it slowly mixes with the other colors. You composed this really well, just wonderful! Have a nice Sunday ... Barbara.

Hello Kath,
I wish you posted ws 2 as main post. Although this light makes me jealous, just as the pov, for me the ws 2 works much more for me with those silhouettes pointing upwards to the sky...what a crazy perfect image..!!!
But seeing this you show us all that being there whole day and maybe more than 1 day is the way to go to do serious photography there. At least you convinced me to spend there 3 or 4 days next time to get the ultimate picture from that wonderful park. Doing the organised tours is a must, also that you show us here....thanks for that..!!!
Have a nice Sunday afternoon,

Beautiful capture of this scerene sunrise.

Superb photo-job. The composition is fantastic with the bushes in the foreground and the silhouettes and a wonderful blue sky in the background. I wondered how you had taken this picture if you had use the flash for the foreground but then I read the note and understood that it was a merger of two different exposures. The result is fantastic. Good evening, Kath.
Hard... no, wait... make it plain impossible not to get enthusiastic when looking at this beauty... Off she goes upon sight into my faves! A shot I damn wish I had in my portfolio... Unfortunately, the only time we managed to get here at dawn (in Aug. 2000) the skies were overcast. Now, this is a most subtle, flawless merge. Everything I see is absolutely perfect, the mood overwhelming, light, colors and contrast mind-blowing. What else can I say : chapeaux!
In my not at all humble opinion (IMNAAHO, take note) one of the best MV shots to ever appear on this site. WOW... TFS!!!
Have a great evening, I'll see ya soon.

Hi, Kath -
I have to agree with Henk; WS2 would have been a great main shot. In fact, it may inspire me to select a posting for today!
This one has a great sky; my problem with it is that the fg looks too bright for the overall scene. This is one situation where HDR overdoes it, I think.
As soon as I wrote that, I had an idea for what to do about it. So I did a quick WS to show you what I mean. It's not meant to be a finished product, just to make a suggestion.
And all in all, it is a GORGEOUS photo! When I'm out that way in October, I will try to find something like it.
Best,
Dan

Hi Kath,
I guess that whoever knows your work had to have high expectations about your photos of this mythic place that makes every landscape photographer dream, but even so, seeing this wonder is absolutely stunning. I went reading what some of the "masters" wrote about it and I am not surprised with the chorus of praises, that prove that I am far from alone in my admiration. I also thought that this is one of the best photos of this place I ever saw (and there are so much!).
I guess that one of the secrets for its great appeal, besides the obvious scenic beauty of the place, specially the silhouettes of the big stone formations the light and colours, is the use of the subtly aligned (blossoming!) bushes that lead the eye to the BG. You were very wise to put them off centred, avoiding the banality of centre and also making a curved visual path in the BG.
The light is masterfully managed, you did a perfect job both at the time of shooting and PP. If it wasn't for the brightness (more accurately the lack of darkness) in the FG, I would believe that you hadn't done any merger. I tend to believe that Wandering_Dan is a bit right about the "HDR" being slightly excessive, but even if it is a bit strange that there is so much difference in the light between the FG and BG, I think it is a completely acceptable "artistic freedom" putting the FG as you did, because your version is much more attractive than his WS.
As is quite usual, the WS's deserved being main posts, specially the #2. I notice that the sharpness of #1 isn't the best one, I suspect that it is one of those cases I mentioned you the other day where the light has a very negative impact on the sharpness. However, eccentric as it may sound, I like shots taken with harsh light like that, namely because I have the idea that most of the times those shots present an image much close to reality.
Regards, José.

Hi Kath,
so here it is, the Monument Valley image! It is truly beautiful and that shows it is worth booking a sunrise/sunset tour. The image is truly exceptional. When I was there we couldn`t spend that much time in Monument Valley, we arrived late in the evening (too late to take some serious sunset images) and only had one day there. WS 2 is very nice, that`s also where I stood and took my images from there, but light wasn`t as good as yours.
This image is so perfect, makes me want to fly directly to MV and shoot my version ;-) Merging the two exposures was the right decission. The foreground and sky are perfectly exposed. Beautiful work, perfect!!!

Hi Kath,
Just stunning work in combining two exposures. To my knowledge, I've never seen this kind of work done so well. I'm amazed that the lighting and color appear very natural for both the 1.8 second sky and the 20 second foreground. I'm not sure how you even saw enough to know that 20 second exposure was perfect.
I can see you planned well in booking the tour. There is no comparison between this one and the daylight version. As to the silhouette WS, I it's nice, but not the caliber of your PP.

Kath,
Beautiful shot of this wonderful place, What make this one special than many others are the light and color of the sunset. There is plenty of light to illuminate the foreground with great details and texture of the wildflowers, yet the sky is nicely saturated with rich and vivid color of the sunset accompanies by the stratified silhouette of the bute, completing this image with a great composition. Thanks.

What a dream of a shot!
There is enough light in the f/g to really show off the wild flowers. And then, in the b/g, you have the most beautifully coloured sky, backing the dramatic silhouettes.
I can imagine how atmospheric it was with the pipe music accompanying this sunrise!

Now I am at a loss to say which, so far is the best picture of your US trip posted so far...this or the Mesa Arch. I've seen picture of this Totem Pole formation from Tan's picture at sunset, but the silhouette effect on it with the crimson sky grading to blue in the BG!...well, this is nothing short of brilliant. The Silhouetted picture in the WS is also superb. Interesting to know about the double exposure in this picture...I've never tried it...is this HDR then?

Hi Kath,
What a majestic shot! This is so impressive...
Clever use of the vertical frame that goes naturally with the rock formation. The moment is delightful and the clouds on the orange part are particularly amazing.
What a show it must be in real life, but your image does a wonderful job taking us there as close as possible to the reality.
Great use of the foreground to add dimension and perspective. This place has to be my next destination... sooner or later.
Magnificient!

Hello kath,
Excellent sunset landscape of the navajo reserve.
I like the country and native people .
Great colors (sky and flowers) and shadows(rock).
beautifull composition. The best I see Today.
Have a good week.

Dramatic shot against the early morning light.
It looks like a scene from the novel by Tony Hillerman. Thank you for your sharing.
