Wild Rice Lake
North of Duluth, Minnesota

I had just picked up my younger daughter from her cello lesson. I was driving home ...I could see that it was going to be a wonderful sunset .. I reached the corner to turn South to turn or North up to the Lakes .. I turned north racing the setting sun up the road to Wild Rice Lake ... I lost ... I was so disappointed as I turned into the parking lot of the frozen lake just after the sun dipped below the horizon. I shot a number of images of the lingering light ... this one .. shooting out into an island on the lake with my 400mm has become my favorite .. and changed my perspective on that day .. although viewing the image you miss the experience about being badgered by my daughters about how cold it was on the lake shore ... my brother gave me a sign as a gift once it reads: having children is like being pecked to death by a duck.

Sometimes the best sunset pictures are taken after the event, as you prove with this. The sky colour is glorious, making a splendid background for the lacy tree branches.

Hi John,

nice to have the camera in those situations. I admit that I frequently leave it at home. I saw the opportunity and shot. This is trully beautiful, love the tones in the sky against the silhouettes of the trees. Effective and beautiful!

there's something very "end of the day" in this photo, something very "whether you want it or not, the day ends". not sure I'm making any sense here :) melancholic and dreamy photo, I definitely like it, makes me think of some Pushkin's poems.

A wonderful photo and a worth-reading note! The atmosphere of this photo even is more fascinating than the sunset itself. This orange sky and these silhouettes of the trees - simply gorgeous! One somehow can feel cold ... a cold orange, somethin new for me ;-))

Hey John,

Although you missed the sunset on the lake, you still managed nicely with this one: lovely orange hues, the contrast between the sharp and the soft trees caught my eyes too. The sky in this dim light is really splendid. Good job.

lovely and dreamily shot with the orange-yellow sky to 'catch' our eyes to this wonderful sunset. The subdued light, with the sun still painting pastoral colors in the sky, makes this a memorable shot.

The colours are glorious and as Kath said many of best sunset shots are actually taken post the actual sunset. Lovely balanced shot with the meshlike silhouettes of the trees. A fine note as well
