Night Lights, a photo from New Mexico, West

Photographer's Note

Capping off a long day of Santa Fe sightseeing, we went to a small restaurant in Santa Fe's Railyard District called Cowgirl BBQ for dinner. I ate a Yak burger, my first time with yak as a meat. My wife had a dessert of icecream in the form of a baked potato - it was a bit of an alternative place, and it was delicious.

As night fell, they had a band playing on the patio, with lanterns like those in the picture strung around for light. Add the moon rising and you have an ideal scene.

Hello again,
You show a considerable diversity of styles and motifs. This pictur is quite romantic, could also be a bit eerie, depending on your own mood. The moon is well placed in relation to the lanterns, and there is still enough daylight remaining for the tree to be clearly visible.

Great composition with a ghostly mood to it. The claritiy of the lights contrasts nicely with the dramatic sky. I love the way the moon just about peeks out behind the tree.

Hello Andrew,

Beautiful composition, with a nice contrast between the darkness of the scene and the warm light of the lamps.
Any reason why you kept your ISO speed relatively high (1600) in order to shoot at 1/200? probably 1/100 with 800 ISO was fast enough for this kind of picture, and with even less noise.
But it's just a minor suggestion, as the picture is great as it is.

Great night picture you're showing us. I like the fact that the natural light can be seen into the clouds and by the presence of the moon. The artificial light is very well rendered.

These evening or night have to are very pleasant with a band playing nice music, this by moon light and three lanterns.
Perfect taken with an excellent angle, this gives depth and perspective.
Colors, sharpness and clarity are perfect taken.

an interesting read, never had a Yak burger before....but i did have a Moose meat burger while traveling to eastern canada and it was the best burger i've ever had!
sounds like you had a memorable time :)
attractive yellow/gold lights contrasting the dark blue/grey skyline.

La lumière est superbe. Le ciel bleu sombre est doucement éclairé par ces belles lanternes. Le choix du format vertical convient bien à cet arbre amputé.

Great atmosphere in this one, complemented by your note. You've captured the lanterns with great sharpness, and there's an attractive play of light and shadow/darkness here. The moody clouds add greatly to the overall effects. Don't know about the yak burger though...

I like this minimalist composition based only on the lanterns that illuminate the patio of the restaurant, the tree, and the moon shining in the sky of the night.
The weak luminosity, the strong contrast of the silhouettes with the beautiful sky and the chromatic quality create a very attractive photo.
It's a nice work.

Such an apprpriate picture as Halloween approaches. The lanterns really pop out in this and stand out so well against that fantastic dark sky. The little bit of light on the trunk also adds great texture to the part of the tree that is illuminated!

This is a beautiful combination of light and dark. Well done on exposure - what really makes it for me are the blue tones and clouds in the sky and, above all, the tiny moon in the top left corner.
