Grand Canyon

Photographer's Note

The bottom of the Grand Canyon was first explored in 1869, amazingly by a one armed Civil War veteran, John Wesley Powell. Powell led a team of 10 men in four wooden boats, starting May 24th on the Green River in Wyoming. In present day Utah, the expedition connected to the Colorado River and proceeded through magnificent canyons, ultimately into the Grand Canyon. After 3 months, the Powell expedition completed their journey of 930 miles on August 30, 1969.

In this image I traced Powell's Grand Canyon raft journey with a commercial company. Rafting one week on the Colorado, starting at Lee's Ferry and ending at Lake Mead. It certainly was "a trip of a life time"...

Hi Ray,

Wow! This must have been a wonderful and exhilarating trip for you - and how nice that you have some of your own photographs from this incredible experience to look back on! And it's great to look back at real photographs from almost 40 years ago!

This immediately appeals to me because there was a series of three programmes on the television here earlier this year about Powell's trip in 1869. A young British TV journalist, Dan Snow, got together with a group of guys - a few from Britain but most from America - to replicate Powell's trip and they did it in four wooden boats which had been constructed in just the same way as Powell's. You can see more about those TV programmes here.

Of course, equipped with a modern digital camera, nowadays you would have come away with a higher quality photograph than this but nevertheless this picture is full of vibrancy and extreme action and we can still clearly see what a dangerous mission this must have been.

I think this is fabulous! Did you scan this one from a colour transparency or a negative or a print? Whatever you did, it has turned out pretty damn well.
