Flying on Fourteenth Street, a photo from New York, Northeast

Photographer's Note

Recently a new mural appeared on a busy stretch of 14th Street, (also known as Union Square South), in the Greenwich Village area of Manhattan. It’s the work of a Brooklyn-based couple called GERALUZ and WERC. Last year, this part of 14th Street was designated for buses and trucks only, allowing for a better flow of traffic. Part of the roadway was also designated as a new pedestrian area just below Union Square Park, and that’s where the mural was painted.

This art, called Collective Vision, is inspired by the power of nature and unity. It features ruby-throated hummingbirds, other generic birds, and different kinds of flowers. Each of the flowers is an endangered native plant. The mural also pays homage to the history of social justice movements in Union Square, as well as the struggle for racial equality in America. Union Square has been a spot for protests of various kinds since the 1800’s.

Here is one section of the mural, looking west on 14th Street. In the WS is another view.

Hello Brenda,
This is street art at its very beast, smart and colorful and well created. It could not possibly have been here if NYC had been run by Republicans, could it? ;-) A bit more city view makes this my preference too, but otherwise the paintings in the WS are equally great and inspiring.

Hello Brenda,
With both pictures you take us back to the flower power time when anti-war demonstrators focused on positive values such as peace and love instead of brute force.
On the other hand, I can understand the raised fist.
After all, the fight for racial equality has dragged on for so long. However, not only a problem for the USA.
As far as women's equality is concerned, today the clock has been turned back several years in Afghanistan. The world is not always improving.

Besides the beautiful & vividly painted road, 14th street looks completely different from what I remember, many buildings got face-lift work and the place looks much more neat than it was.

It is very cheering, and I am sure that it must make people smile when they see it.
The main post is taken from a good point of view looking along 14th Street.
Viewed via a drone it must look even more impressive.

How to call such street art? The murals are on the walls, so maybe streetal? Anyway, It looks fantastic. The perspective is stunning, the colours are fantastic. I wonder how long it will last, hopefully, a long time.

i remember seeing similar paintings on the streets when I was there, but not quite like this. wouldn't it be cool if all our streets were painted haha..looking at the scene, i'm very curious about that red thing on the right...is that an old mailbox??? what is that? cheers

I see that part of 14th Street changed for a garden. The sidewalks are covered with flowers and birds so children will be have fun.

Very creative close up of the artwork. It makes the street so much more colorful. Very well composed with the street in the very centre, where the are meets with the reality.
I suppose the real hummingbirds are rarely seen in the NYC itself because there is not too much vegetation in there?
