Photographer's Note
A american icon to start a new series on a trip I did this summer in Northern California. Even if rodeos have gone from small, local events to big business, the spirit of the old American West can still be found there. Modern-day cowboys compete to stay on wild, jumping horses, or struggle to ride bulls that weigh up to a ton. There is no question that rodeos can be dangerous for the humans involved an the animals as well.

Bonjour Vincent

Rodeos are dangerous and for many people also cruel because of the abuse many animal suffer. However is a feature of Western North America and often a fun entertainment. You captured this moment very well and it seem the horse was kicking back a little too fast for the lens ;-) Great picture Vincent.

Bonjour Vincent -
The small local rodeo's are still out there you have to really look for them. My wife and I attended one in 2003 in Steamboat Springs, CO and had a grand time. I also spotted one in Evanston, WY, this summer but we had just arrived in town and the event was already underway. This is a dynamic image showing the bronc rider and his safety man in action. My only comment and I hope it is not taken as a negative is that IMO just one thing in the image should be focus. I know you were panning with the action and it is hard to get things in focus. I feel the image would be a grounded a bit with just something in focus. Anyway, well done and captured. Did you enjoy the rodeo?
Thank you for sharing.
John

Probably impossible to do with the available light and the speed of the broncos but I would love to see this sharp. Nevertheless you have captured the excitement of the occasion very well. It must have been an enjoyable experience.

Bonsoir Vincent,

Hi Vincent
The fact that everything blurred (some more) at this shot gives a fine feeling of motion as well.
Theres been plans for this kind of shows in Denmark, but they was dropped.

Hello Vincent,
Bravo !

Hi Vincent. This shot certainly displays a lot of dynamism, but it doesn't quite work for me because I feel there is too much out of focus. The panning works well to blur the ground and background (it creates a nice texture on the ground) but you needed a faster shutter speed (at least 1/60, maybe 1/100) to keep more of the horses sharper). An alternative approach would have been to leave the shutter speed at 1/30 and not pan (which would have given you that nice movement of the legs on the front horse with a sharper background). Others seem to like it though as is, so looks like I am in the minority with this opnion! Cheers . . . David

Hi Vincent,
Great blurring action here, with a real dynamism. I love the action here. The rich brown hue of the ground blends so well with the horses. There is a real art to catching this kind of action. Well done...Demain.

Movement and action all make for a lively shot. You caught it at a great moment when the horses feet were off the ground. I really love the blur of the motion, well done!

Salut Vincent

Great American icon stuff, Vince, showing men doing what a man has to do. The motion blur is delightful, creating a great sense of excitement and movement but leaving just enough sharpness to hold the composition together.

Salut Vincent,

Not the best of the focusing here, but that's what you
get when taking action shots with a 1/30 sec. of a shutter
speed, Vincent.
Apart from that there's a certain amount of wildness in
this shot that makes it work for me - looking at the horse
in the FG, I wonder how these cowboys make more than 3
seconds on the horseback?!?
Cheers,
Robi
