Stendhal in Melbourne, a photo from Victoria, East

Photographer's Note

Whilst walking in the city I saw this gentleman absorbed in Stendhal's world. I liked the colour combination of his coat, coffee, table and book. So I approach him and asked whether i could take a photo. As you can see, he was most obliging.And I don't think he was listening to Heavy Metal or Rap while reading.

I'm a big reader myself. Hardly a day goes by that I don't read. Usually at home, but sometimes out on an outdoor terrace of a bar or café. So this scene certainly is one I can relate too.

Good clarity and sharpness. The rather heavy vignetting seems to isolate the man in his world of fiction.

Great street portrait, and as a reader, of course, I appreciate being able to figure out just exacttly which book he is reading.

Wonderfull portrait deep inhis lecture and milk-cafe. Perfect POV and compo.
He seems to be my age, and a bookworm like me. And the Stendhal book is a perfect choice.

This is a very good portrait from the street. How nice to see somebody actually reading a book along with his coffee, and not even the latest bestseller. The brownish tones are very well matching and it is fairly easy to overlook the less than beautiful background.

If I haven't read your note I would be sure this is a candid photo, so absorbed in his book your subject seems to be! Great portrait.
It's incredible how different his timeless world inside the peaceful cafe looks in comparison with what we see through the window.

A rare situation, people use to read less and less books, for sure it is a man of the old school, a younger one could read an e-book. You have captured a very nice portrait of the man in a pose from an old photo album :)

It's nice to see how peacefully he is enjoying his read in the quietness and he is definitely concentrating until you came along!! Excellent when the focus is as precise as it is here; his face - it doesn't matter that he's not looking at the camera or that we can't actually see his eye, that's the part of the face we automatically go to first, and the quality of light on the point of interest and the supporting props is lovely. This is a good grab shot, it epitomises everything that's positive about snapshot, a frozen moment in time and a chance encounter with a stranger and his world. The tight crop gives far greater instant image impact.

PS: as to your query, the trouble is that I only joined TE in 2010 and I have lots of raw images in my archive taken since 2000 which i consider as good quality I would like to share. On and off i go for my foto assignment, I have uploaded some taken last year and I have planed for another destn in Jan. Thanks.

A fascinating portrait of these literature-lover. We can see on his face that he really is absorbed by the story. And Stendhal is of course world literature. He even forgets the drink his coffee.
I think this is a Brahms-type, probably listening to one of the sonatas.
