'The Birth of Australian Rules'

Australian rules football is officially known as Australian football also informally known as football, Aussie rules or (colloquially) as footy.

This sculpture commemorates the first game of Australian Rules Football played between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar at 12 midday, on August 7, 1858, on the site of the MCG, which was up to 1965 exclusively the home of the Melbourne Football club, one of the oldest football clubs in the world.

This larger than lifesize sculpture depicts a passage of play where two boys of the period are having a dramatic struggle for the ball and the game is being umpired by Tom Wills, who was the architect of the game and who made a major contribution to the drafting of the initial set of rules and umpired the first ever game.
